Ted Summers

–

Guymon, Oklahoma

Teddy Lee Summers of Guymon, passed from this life at 6:21 a.m., on August 13, 2012 in Amarillo, TX after fighting a long and courageous battle with Heart Disease. The son of W.L. and Juanita Summers, he was born on January 30, 1938 in Ames, OK. He married Darla Philbrick on July 28, 1956 at the Bethel Hawley Baptist Church in Jefferson, OK. They moved to the Guymon in 1963 and spent many years farming.

Ted leaves behind his wife, life partner and caregiver of 56 years, Darla, of the home in rural Guymon. Their lives were blessed with three daughters, Rhonda and Don January of Enid; Robin Summers and Jimmy Bourgeois of Brownwood, TX and Roxanne and Michael Peterson of Ft. Worth, Texas. He was blessed with 6 grandchildren, Travis and Sarah January, Bellaire, KS; Rochelle and Aaron Napier, Hutchinson, KS; Jamye Bowers, Ft. Worth, TX, Tyler January, Brownwood, TX, Micah Peterson, Ft. Worth, TX and Tim Peterson, Pacific, Missouri. He loved his greats, Landon Bowers, Caroline and Mark January, Noah Napier and was excited for the next January-Napier, arriving in January. He is also survived by a brother, Stanley and his wife Jtonne Summers, of Ames, OK; two brother-in-laws, Cleo and wife, Billie Philbrick, of Nash, OK and RJ "Shorty" and wife, Barbara Philbrick, of Waukomis, OK, numerous nieces and nephews, four God-children, Logan, Mason, Michael and Christopher Settle, Eureka, MO, and his precious "kids" Ms. T and Toby; his "coffee" shop family, and lifelong friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents W.L. and Juanita Summers, a brother, Billy Summers, his parents-in- law Merle and Berniece Philbrick Vance and Clint Vance and a niece, Jo Summers and many special friends and family.

Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you... plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future", describes the life of Teddy Lee Summers. He had more than his "9" lives and his family and friends had the privilege of many extra years as a gift to be shared. At age 48, he had his first heart attack and Dr. Logsdon told him the stress of farming was going to kill him, he had to find a hobby - he did, he bought a drag race car and had great success as the driver of "Father Time"! Ted knew how to have fun and celebrate life... .from antics as a youth in Drummond, to dune buggies and rock hunting, the motorhome, fishing at the gulf and turtle fishing at the tailwater pit with his grandkids, hunting, the cabin at Angel Fire, snow mobiling, 4-wheelers, Easter egg hunts and the lakehouse at Canton. He was responsible for driving lessons for all the kids and grandkids, drag racing expeditions, the triplets, stuffed peppers and peach cobbler. He loved playing WaaHoo, Dominoes, and went to heaven with many a quarter won by the fast and furious Sputnik rounds he shared (and, won!!).

For too many years, we planned our lives around, "would daddy be ok, and would he be here", but most of all, we continued to live and celebrate with cherished family vacations at Canton Lake, Lake Texhoma, a Bahamas cruise, visits to the new Cowboys Stadium for the first concert , a Cowboys/Seahawks game and more fun at the lake! He never knew a stranger and if you had a need, he would fill it. The "extras" the kids and grandkids brought home were all made to feel a part of the family. Most of all, we are thankful you were man enough to know you needed Jesus and that this world was your temporary home. We love you; see you Tuesday!!

The Summers' family will receive friends for visitation on Wednesday evening from 7-9 PM.

Memorial services will take place Thursday, August 16, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Victory Memorial United Methodist Church in Guymon with Rev. Gary Holdeman and Rev. Tom Freeman, officiating. Services are under the care of Henson-Novak Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Elmhurst Cemetary.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Martinez, Angela, and the Amarillo Heart Group Team, as well as Northwest Texas Heart Hospital for giving us the gift of many years of life that we would not have had without them.

Memorials may be made to The American Heart Association in hopes that other families will have that same gift. Memorials will be accepted at Henson-Novak Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1306, Guymon, OK 73942.
